As is well known, the American artist-composer John Cage (1912-1992) gave an exemplary answer to the question of the acoustic sound of silence in his piece 4’33”, which was first performed in 1952. Whether initially conceived as a solo for piano or later even for a large orchestra, there is nothing, nothing at all to be heard for more than four and a half minutes (a small eternity, one might think). The beginning and end of the piece are marked by the opening and closing of the piano lid in the concert hall, the playing time of the three movements of the piece – tacet, tacet, tacet (pause, pause, pause) – is usually determined by the use of playing dice by the musicians before the performance.
